It is important to note that the life of a teenager is full of conflicting emotions, situations, changes, and decisions. They are usually confused because they lack experience in life, making them vulnerable to various forms of abuse (Harrison, 224). In addition to this, process of transitioning from childhood to adulthood, adolescents face new challenges, such as balancing school work and extra-curricular activities or learning how to manage finances.
Mentally and emotionally, both boys and girls experience sudden mood swings. They often become reflective about the meaning of life and question their understanding of themselves, family relationships, and society as a whole. Puberty can be an exciting time full of changes. Still, it has its own set of challenges, too, such as adapting to physical changes that come with puberty, like acne breakouts or menstrual cramps, which can be uncomfortable at times.
Everyone goes through puberty in different ways, some earlier than others; during this period, teenagers need adequate guidance from adults around them so they won’t feel overwhelmed by the many changes happening in their bodies.
The teenagers also go through physical changes in their bodies. The body undergoes rapid and drastic changes during the teenage period, sometimes making it hard to cope without guidance or support. For example, suppression of hormones causes pimples which cause low self-esteem among teenagers.
Another challenge that teenagers face is peer pressure as to how they should look or act like and dress up. This peer pressure can be both positive and negative depending on what type of people surround them. Teens may experience sadness due to a lack of acceptance from peers as well as having difficulty in making friends because of shyness or other issues.
Furthermore, hormone changes occur at this stage, and teenagers can even experience mood swings. An environment that does not provide the freedom for them to express themselves will only make matters worse since they lack somebody whom they can share their feelings with. This happens when parents are busy trying to secure their careers and do not have enough time for their children, thus portraying an unsupportive attitude towards them.
In such cases, support from friends or people who understand what they are going through is crucial, but if those around them fail to offer any help, then it would be hard for those teens.
Another big challenge faced by teenagers is dealing with parents. Teenagers often misunderstand their parents and vice versa, which leads to confusion and sometimes fights too. Parents also struggle to understand the world of teens as they do not live in that era anymore. Moreover, a lack of communication between teens and parents creates a wall between them (Khan, 315). It can be hard for teenagers to come out of their shells in this situation, but once they strike a balance, things become easier again.
On the other hand, teenage life has the responsibility of their studies. During the adolescent years is when students should create a strong academic foundation to continue later seeking higher education opportunities. In this period of life, teenagers must find and learn how to use resources in order to pursue their dreams. This can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time since they will try different learning activities, social interactions, and educational experiences (Occasional Quest, 65).
Therefore, being a teen is like having one foot in childhood and another in adulthood, which is an amazing experience for them, creating memories but also giving opportunities for improvement with greater knowledge acquired everyday.
By the time they reach adulthood, teens can look back and realize that those teenage years had a huge impact on them. They will have learnt valuable lessons about life, friendships, and relationships, as well as gaining experiences that will shape their future life. However, difficulties should not be seen as something negative; it is simply part of growing up and accepting change. One can also turn such hardships into an opportunity to grow stronger and develop more skills which in turn could help one to create a successful future!
In conclusion, being a teenager is filled with both positive and negative experiences. An individual should understand that the teenagerhood phase will not last forever and therefore embrace it positively in order for him/her to get the best out of it.
